The cream rises to the top, right? If you are just really really good at what you do and work harder than everyone else you’ll make it right?
Yeah….. I don’t think so.
Turns out you need some luck.
Similar to college admissions… Prestigious colleges want you to believe they only accept the best of the best and that those turned away are not good enough.
The reality is these colleges have more qualified applicants then they do actual admission spots at the school. Those that get in are more or less selected at random from a too large pool of qualified applicants.
The same goes for Spotify editorial placements. There are more qualified songs (good enough) to make the playlist than there are spots. If you didn’t make the cut that does not mean your song is not good enough.
Let’s say a peer get’s their song on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. The next month you release a tune you think is just as good if not better in the same genre and style, but you don’t get on NMF.
Does that mean your music sucks and you should quit? NO!
Does that mean your peer is better than you and you should quit? NO!
Does that mean you ought to think some thoughts that throw you into a shame spiral? NO!
There are more great songs than there are spots. Your song might be great, but you didn’t get lucky. This time!
When in doubt, make beautiful art. Just keep making. Luck happens when mastery and consistency hook up. Please do not quit.
